TikTok (TT) Faces Legal Scrutiny Over Children’s Privacy Violations
In recent developments, the U.S. Department of Justice is set to focus on allegations against TT for violating children’s privacy rights. This legal action stems from a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) investigation, which suggests that TT, owned by ByteDance, failed to adhere to a 2019 agreement designed to protect children’s privacy. The FTC believes TT is either violating or is about to violate the law, prompting the Justice Department’s involvement.
This lawsuit highlights the ongoing concerns about the safety and privacy of young users on social media platforms. TT has expressed disagreement with the FTC’s claims and disappointment over the lawsuit. This case is separate from the broader concerns in Congress about the potential misuse of TT’s user data by the Chinese government, which TT denies.
Additionally, TikTok is currently challenging a law requiring ByteDance to divest its U.S. assets by January 19, 2024, or face a ban. ByteDance argues that such divestiture is not feasible technologically, commercially, or legally.
